While available technology for detecting leaks has become more sophisticated, it's still largely a manual process.

There are at least two automatic systems employed.

One uses sensors to look for changes in the levels of Iron Oxide in the soil around water pipes.

Another uses sensors to measure changes in sound waves through the water, and the pipe itself.
